I started thinking about Veterans Day today. Tomorrow, I'm going to show a short powerpoint I made during student teaching (includes Taps - very emotional for me), play a quick history channel video, and then read America's White Table (if I can make through without crying). The powerpoint includes a slide of family and friends who are/were veterans. Normally, I would wait until Friday to do this, but I'm taking a half-day to go visit my brother (an active-duty veteran) in Fredericksburg this weekend. I feel like I'm walking on thin ice this year, because the brother of one of my students was KIA last year. I want to be sensitive, but I also feel it is important for my students to learn the meaning and importance of Veterans Day. At the end, and continuing during writing this week, I'm going to have the students write thank you letters. I'm going to try to get in touch with the VA or someone and actually have the letters mailed. Any ideas on who I need to contact?
What are you all doing for Veterans Day?? I could always use new ideas.
Update: I found a website for sending letters to anonymous soldiers :
A Million Thanks. I'm definitely do this!! :) Also, I've decided to post my powerpoint incase anyone would like to use it. If not, my feelings aren't hurt! :)
