No, I'm not getting married (I'll start buying cats soon) and no, I'm not preggers. I am, however, leaving the state of North Carolina. North Carolina gave me my first job when I was looking during a time of hiring freezes, but it just isn't worth being away from family any longer. I had a nephew born last August and my dad was diagnosed with cancer last October. I'm living in NC with no family and my only friends are the people with whom I work. Many of us are all going different directions, professionally, so the time is right.

So, I am pleased to announce that I am moving back to my home state of South Carolina, and I have accepted a 5th grade position in the Upstate! I hate change... this is scary... but I know it's the right decision!

I'm coming home...
Yes, I went a whole school year without posting. Yes, it was a difficult year. I'll update soon.

While perusing Facebook tonight, I saw a personal eulogy for a man who had passed. I recognized the name as the former 5th grade teacher of my oldest brother. My brother will be 40 this year. I sent my bro a message letting him know. The following was our conversation:

Me: Didn't you have Mr. W? He died...
Bro: Yes. F*$k!
Bro: He was the best English teacher I ever had. He even paddled me once... LOL.
Me: You probably deserved it!
Bro: I probably did! He introduced me to Edgar Allan Poe, and Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear... Good man.
Bro: Ugh... Sucks... I always wanted to touch base with him... Let him know I wasn't a F*$k up.
Me: Well one thing it tells me... Kids never forget!
Bro: No... NEVER. He had a positive impact on me... He made reading fun.
Me: And that is VERY hard to do.
Bro: He could do it... He would change his voice with every character while reading a chapter... Then leave us with the next 5 or 6... Those voices would be in our heads... To be honest, I still use them while reading today.
Me: That's awesome!
Bro: Yeah. I've never been emotional about a passing teacher. He was great.
Me: Some of them are THAT great.

Lesson: Strive to be the best you can be every day. Kids will remember us at our best or our worst. We DO make a difference.

What is better than watching your teachers sing, dance, and act silly in a music video? I would have loved it when I was a kid. We definitely do this for the kids! We didn't have ANY fun recording and filming. None.... That's such a lie! :) This year, we are doing a Math-a-thon to encourage students to learn their math facts. One of our amazingly gifted 1st grade assistants wrote the lyrics to the song, Blurred Lines. It turned out pretty good. We practiced/recorded the vocals yesterday after school. We probably had to repeat the process 50 times. Between messing up, changing things, and laughing until we nearly peed our pants, it took quite a while. The filming took forever, but we had a lot of fun. The best part?? The first time students see the video, it will be at our Math Parent Night.... in front of PARENTS! Yay! Haha! It's all good... they'll see our awesome dancing skills and think we're cool, right?

Shortly before the school year started, I was introduced to something called nameplate pockets. I thought they were cool, but didn't think too much about them because... well, I despise nameplates. Last year, at the Carson-Dellosa warehouse sale (a perk to living in the NC Triad), I bought a pack of large nameplates for $1.00 just incase I ever decided to use them. A month into the school year, I realized that my students needed the nameplates, not only for the cursive writing, but also for the multiplication chart. (Math facts are a weakness.) I wasn't about to put the nameplates down without anything covering them, and there was no way I was going to put packing tape on my desks. That would be a NIGHTMARE at the end of the year to clean. I found Ashley Clear Nameplate Pockets on Amazon and ordered them. (They're also available through Staples.) They are WONDERFUL. They haven't peeled up or torn; however, I did warn my students not to mess with them. They're so simple to use! I highly recommend them! :)

Also, I wanted to share the school shirts I had made with Vistaprint! Are they absolutely beautiful?? :) The design was completely my own. I made it using PowerPoint and saved it as a png. This allowed me to have a "clear" background. 1921 was the year the school was established. It took a lot of research to determine the date. Tell me how awesome it is!! :)

Listening: I absolutely love JEOPARDY! I watch it every night!
Loving: Friday's are always a welcomed sight! :)
Thinking: My first observation will be next week. Nervous? No, but I want everything to go smoothly.
Wanting: I don't have a big sweet tooth, but I love mint chocolate chip ice cream!
Needing: My teacher friends and I have decided we need "sanity savers" to make it through October. Tomorrow we'll be in the Mt. Airy area for a winery, dinner, and dance. We're going to watch one of our young male teachers play in an "old-time" band.
Trick: Set up a daily SMARTboard notebook that will guide you through your day. I never look at my plans, because all the slides and information I need are on my daily SMART!
Luckily, my school is packed with people who know how to relax and enjoy life. I'm thankful to have people like this in my life! :)

For your amusement: We decided to use the stability balls completely inappropriately, and Ms. P ended up on the floor! The kids probably would not get away with something like this! :)
Normally she is here for several days, but this time, it's just going to be one day. From what I understand, we are going to be observing model lessons. I'm not sure if it will be a guided reading lesson or a whole group lesson. It should be informative. It always feels like a whirlwind takes over our school when she's visiting, but we always learn a lot.

Anywho, I rarely reach my breaking point, but yesterday pushed me there. After school, we had a meeting about the new NC grading program that has so many kinks it's ridiculous (but thankfully the date of interim reports was pushed back), had to get our grade-level planning done, had OPEN HOUSE, we had to show a video at open house and my computer went stupid 10 minutes before it started, I didn't get a break to have dinner, and then I had one parent show up on time (4 showed up the whole night). I was just done. This week is packed with TOO MUCH!! So to make myself feel better, I ate fatty food. I can't even afford McDonald's this month, but I collected enough pennies in my car to pay.

Here's to hoping the week gets better...
I've been super busy since school started! I just wanted to post a video I uploaded to YouTube last night. It's a Forces and Motion song... I didn't write the lyrics (someone else in the county wrote them) but I created the music/lyrics video to make it easier for the kids to sing. Feel free to use it if you like it! :)

I've successfully created a "When We Grow Up" poster of my class again this year (without the fuzzies and "When We Grow Up..." at the bottom)! I absolutely love making these. Especially when you look back at them at the end of the year. The kids change so much! If you want so tips and tricks, I take the pictures with my iPhone, edit them with Instagram (just be careful not to post them for the world to see), and use Picasa to make the collage. It turns out perfect and the resolution is large enough to make posters using the poster printer! :)
We have had a few meetings, but mostly the planning with my team has been tiring. I hate sitting for hours on end. Well, I suppose I should say I hate sitting in hard, plastic chairs for hours on end. I have no problem sitting on my couch all day. :) We spent Wednesday and Friday planning. We have pretty much mapped out our year. It's nice having a guide!

Thursday was Open House. I thought it was a pretty relaxing, easy day until I found out, 15 minutes before Open House, that I had two new students. Earlier in the week, I put together folders with all the information that I wanted parents to have at hand. I thought about making a couple extra folders and didn't do it. I was kicking myself Thursday afternoon!! With that being said, Open House went really well. 18 of my 23 students showed up. Last year, I think I had a total of 5 students come.

Exciting news: The Time Warner Cable news crew was at our school Friday doing an interview. They spent a good bit of time on our end of the hall. I'm excited to see what they put together!! {I'm not sure how I'm going to see it, though... I don't have Time Warner Cable.} The newspaper will be at our school on Monday taking pictures. My principal said she didn't know what they would be taking pictures of but to not be surprised if they came in our rooms. Cool, huh?! :)

Anywho, most of my work in the classroom this week has been making copies, straightening, etc. Nothing big. I took a couple pictures before I left last night:

I made charts to graph CFA data and district ClassScape benchmarks. The CFA's will have pre and post tests, so hopefully, the students (class average) will be able to see growth. I also added Revised Bloom's posters below the bulletin board. I don't really like to buy things I can make myself, but I got really lazy about the time I was thinking about Bloom's! :)

Our district provided us with really good math posters last year, but they weren't very kid-friendly. These posters use kid-friendly language and they're in the form of "I can" statements. My teammate, Greta, made these.
Finally, what's missing?? The TV!! I put in a work order to have the TV removed from my classroom. You might think I'm crazy, but it was never used. I didn't even have it plugged in last year. It was just a big black box that took up a lot of wall space! I put my rules over the spot where the stand connected to the wall, but I'm not sure I like them there. I might move things around. We'll see!

School starts Monday! I'm not sure I'm ready! Waking up Friday morning was painful. Literally. My body told me no! :) BUT, ready or not, here it comes!
You might have seen pictures from my Classroom Tour post.

Monday Made It #1: Happy Birthday Fun Straws

I copied this project from one of my co-workers, Ms. P, but I made my own birthday balloons. I've used these chevron colors in other places in my classroom, so I thought they would match quite well. I'm pretty thrilled with how they turned out. Right now, I have 22 balloons stuffed into that class vase. It's a little tight! I haven't decided if I'm going to share these on TpT. When I save them as a PDF, the center of the "p's" are colored in. We'll see...

Monday Made It #2: Popcorn Labels

Last year, I used the ones that were all over pinterest. This year, I wanted my name to be on the popcorn label, so I decided to make my own. I am in love with how they turned out. I posted a picture of these on Instagram and several of my teacher friends asked me to make a personalized label for them. Life would be so much easier if fonts would go with documents when they're emailed.

Monday Made It #3: Class Rules

I decided to overhaul and simplify my class rules this year. Katie, taught 4th grade last year and is our newest Lead Teacher this year, had these rules in her classroom. I just like how simple they are. My class and I can list rule after rule but really it all boils down to these two rules. I'm going to have this blown up with the poster printer.

Monday Made It #4: Happy Birthday Fun Straws

Again, I got this idea from my friend, Ms. P. I'm going to use this during guided reading. It never fails that students come up to me asking SOMETHING when I am trying to focus on my group. We'll see how this works out! ($1.00 at Dollar Tree)

Monday Made It #5: Ticket out the Door

This was posted on my Classroom Tour post, but I didn't really say much about it. Again, my friend, Ms. P, helped me with this one. She made a cute TotD several weeks ago. I have pretty severe OCD at times, and it took me forever to figure out how to do these pockets. There were only 3 of each color, so it made figuring out the pattern difficult. This is what I came up with and I'm happy with it. I LOVE the title!

Monday Made It #6: Dismissal Checklist

I posted a picture of this one the other night, too. Last year, dismissal was pretty hectic at times. Hopefully, starting this from day one, things will be different this year.

That's all I have pictures of to post! Please give me feedback! :)

OH!! I've discovered a great store that has things from $1-$5. It's called Five Below. You have to check it out if you have a store near you. I'm thinking about trying stability balls after Christmas (I really want to try now, but I'm very unsure about this group of students.). They're only $5 each!! I got a couple games for indoor recess days. I also got these two things:

I'm a little bit of a punk at heart and I absolutely LOVE plaid shoes! I have a pair of blue plaid Vans. (The students think I'm cool when I wear them.) I also found this duct tape. I have been obsessed with sheep since I went to Ireland. (They are everywhere in Ireland). I don't know how I'm going to use the tape, but I couldn't pass it up! :) *Update: I decided to use the sheep tape to edge dry erase boards like the boards for earlier this summer (Monday Made It - Dry Erase Boards). I only edged 6 boards and they will be used in my guided reading groups.
Today was the first day we were allowed in our classrooms. I was super excited when the email from our principal was sent out this morning. SUPER EXCITED! :) Today, I got all of the furniture in place. The desks may change depending on how many students I have (I probably won't find out until Meet the Teacher night.), but everything else is where it is staying. I decided to move my guided reading table from the window area to the counter area. It is just going to be a lot nicer having that storage space behind me. I've mentioned before that we are not allowed to have "teacher desks" so we have to get creative with storage. New in the classroom this year is an actual "teacher desk" that I am using as my computer/SMART camera desk. I had a huge table last year that just took up too much space. The teacher desk is the perfect length, plus it has drawers to hide all my junk when visitors come. We were observed by other schools/teachers quite a bit last year. I also have a tall filing cabinet this year. I feel like it will help me better organize student papers, as well as the papers I need to keep from year to year.

Click on the pictures below to see them larger. In the third picture, I'm not sure about the placement of the rug under my guided reading table. What do y'all think?
Just a little bit of info about a few items... the orange polka dot rug came from Ikea. It was only $19, so I highly recommend it. The storage ottoman came from Hobby Lobby. It was on clearance for $16.

B2S Must Haves:
1. A Plan - you never feel good when you're not prepared! Plan for it!
2. Organization - self explanatory!
3. Lamps - I don't use my overhead lights EVER. Lamps are easier on the eyes and they make the room feel homey. If your fire marshall allows, I would definitely invest in lamps!
Seriously, over the last two weeks, I've driven over 1,000 miles!! Crazy! Anyway, since getting back, I've had time to make some stuff for school!

I ended up having a meltdown a day after getting back. My printer, after installing $40 worth of ink, would not print anything correctly! I spent three hours cleaning everything I could. So, I went out and bought a new one. I don't recommend EPSON.

Monday Made It: Alphabet
The first thing I "made" was Ladybug's Teacher Files round cursive alphabet. I have to tell you about the tool I found at Hobby Lobby that made this project super simple. It's a circle cutter from Martha Stewart!! After I cut them out, I laminated them and used the circle cutter again. I also scaled the alphabet down to 85% when I printed it... full size was just too big for me.

Monday Made It: Jobs Chart and Student Numbers
The second thing I made was a jobs chart. Several weeks ago I posted that I had plans to make one, but had no idea how I wanted it to look. I went for super simple...kinda. I printed the job names on Avery Sticker Paper and cut out each one and stuck it to those super cute paisley pockets. I couldn't figure out what type of glue to use to glue everything to the poster paper, but ended up using Rubber Cement. Hopefully it holds! What do you think? PS, I believe I've said before that OCD is a disability. I, seriously, had to measure everything! :)

My friend and co-worker, Ms. P at Wild about Learning!, suggested that I try to find craft sticks with hands on them for the student numbers for the jobs chart. Get it? Lend me a HAND? :) I looked all over the internet and found nothing, so I decided to make my own. I designed, printed, cut, laminated, cut (again) and glued them to craft sticks. You like? I'm going to put a pocket off to the side to hold the extra sticks.
That's all I had time to make! I finished reading Nicholas Sparks' memoir, Three Weeks with My Brother earlier this week. His books make so much sense after reading it. Saturday, I read (yes, all in one day) Nights in Rodanthe. It was really good. I think they changed too much in the movie, though. Typical.

We haven't heard yet when we will be able to get back into the school to work. I went in to do interviews last Wednesday and was told that we would definitely be able to get in when the floors are done! It would be nice to be able to do a few hours of work every day and not have to rush to get the room ready! When are you all able to get into your rooms?

I keep my political beliefs to myself, simply because I know people judge others when it comes to politics and I want to be judged based on my character. These are two things (below) you can't really ignore (especially in NC). The graphic I first saw after Ron Clark (North Carolina native) posted it on Facebook yesterday. The video is a clip from when a NC educator protested on the state house grounds and was subsequently arrested. I'm quite proud of her.

I KNOW all of you have seen this at some point the last couple years, but I finally got around to making it. I don't have a lot of patience when it comes to "no names." Honestly, I would rather throw the papers away (and sometimes, if I'm in a mood, I will). I just feel that there is no excuse by the time kids reach 5th grade. Am I expecting too much? Maybe, but I'm not lowering my expectations. So, instead of harping, I'm going to try this out and see how it works. I glued magnets to the back so I can put it on my whiteboard. I also bought one of those giant clothespins from the Target Dollar Spot and glued magnets to the back of that. You can never have enough magnetic clips!

So, I have this stuff... I'm not really sure what to do with it. Obviously, I'm using the giant erasers again this year. They worked out great last year. I'm thinking about banning cap erasers from the get go. {I saw them torn apart on the floor [from being thrown] more often than I saw them on pencils.} I was thinking about velcroing the cups to the students desks to hold pencils, highlighters, and expos. I'm not certain on that, though. Has anyone tried that? Did it work?

That's all for this week! I don't think I'll have much, if anything next week, since I'm at my brother's and then home to SC Sunday. BUT, maybe I'll surprise you! :) Have a great week!

So, I read a book Tuesday. Yes, an entire book. I finally got around to reading The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. He and I have a love/hate relationship. {He doesn't know this, of course.} When bad things happen to good people, I hate him. When love wins, I love him. By Tuesday night, I hated him. That's all I'll say incase you haven't read the book. Yesterday morning, I started reading the memoir he wrote with his brother, Three Weeks with My Brother. Y'all... I sat on the couch and had three cups of coffee while reading. THREE! I am loving this book! I'm half-way finished. BUT I hate when I get into a book... simply because I finish it so quickly!
This is totally how I feel toward the end of some books. A little ridiculous? Maybe. Do you all have any book suggestions? Anything that is a must read? I'm still working my way through Teach Like a Pirate. I'm heading up to my brother's in VA in a few minutes. The 150 pages I have left in Three Weeks with My Brother will not last me! Thanks in advance! :)
Friends, incase you don't receive the emails, I wanted to make you aware of the current Groupon for $70 worth of Vistaprint products for $17. It's a great deal! I'm thinking about buying it just incase I need to have something made in the future! I wish I had waited to have my postcards made! I'm not posting a direct link, because it will lead you to the NC Triad. You should be able to find the Vistaprint Groupon, though! There are so many uses in the classroom! If you need some ideas, click here, here, and here! I've made even more products that I never thought to blog about! :) It's worth it if you think you might use it!
Monday Made It Breakfast Edition: Superfood Smoothie

This really is a Monday Made It seeing as it's Monday and I just made it! :) I've decided to try to become more healthy. You mean exercise? No... though I definitely should. I'm being more aware of what I'm putting in my body. For me, breakfast is when this really needs to happen. I'm not one of those people that can skip breakfast... especially being a teacher. If I don't have breakfast, I'll hit the floor and have kids running for help! So... I'm on a healthy kick. I started juicing a month or so ago. Not as a meal replacement, but as added nutrition. I realized, though, that I'm missing A LOT of the nutrition when throwing away the pulp. I'm not sure if any of you have tried Naked Green Machine Smoothie, but it is my absolute favorite! It's green... weird... yum! I got to wondering if I could recreate this smoothie at home.

Enter Nutribullet. {FYI, Bed Bath and Beyond accepts expired coupons.} I like the Nutribullet because I get whole food nutrition by not throwing away pulp. The Nutribullet also gets everything pretty smooth. The other day, I went to the store and purchased kelp, spinach, lemons, pears, apples, carrots, cantaloup, kiwi, and pineapple. I also went to Whole Foods and purchased the canister of Green Superfood and Ground Chia Seeds. Both of these are incredibly healthy. The Green Superfood is packed with.... SUPERFOODS! Just don't smell it. :) The Chia Seeds are great source of Omega-3's and fiber and have been shown to prevent spikes or dips in blood sugar levels {I kinda have issues here}. So, you're wondering, "How do all those weird things taste," right?

Well... the first smoothie I made was not so good. I included spinach, lemon, pear, apple, carrot, Green Superfood (1/2 serving), Chia. Good gracious acid reflux! I was surprised that it wasn't good because this is one of my most favorite juicing recipes (sans Green Superfood and Chia). Also, I don't eat pears, normally, because of how grainy they feel when I chew them. This was no different when they were pulverized. Sad day. :( My second smoothie was pretty good, though. Spinach, banana, cantaloup, pineapple, carrot, Green Superfood (1/2 serving), Chia. Now, does it taste like Naked Green Machine? Not even close. Is it drinkable? Absolutely! I need to keep this up to see if I'll be able to survive the morning at school with this for breakfast. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm hoping to have actually created something for school next week. I've purchased a few things, but I'm not quite certain what I want to do with them, yet! :)

I'm back from the mountains trip with friends. We had a great time, and I must admit it was great being "unplugged" from the real world. At the cabin, we had no cell service or internet. Wow! The only downer to our trip was that it rained... and rained... and rained... We went up to Tweetsie Railroad to watch fireworks on the 4th, but we ended up leaving because of the rain and storms. {Notice the picture of friends holding the tarp above our heads.} We had a couple hours of good weather when we went up to Blowing Rock, NC the other day. {Gorgeous mountain view...} The weather finally cleared up when we left yesterday. Figures, right? :) We had breakfast at The Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, NC. It was spectacular! I ate so much I didn't need to eat again until dinner! Anywho, it's great to be back and sleeping in my own bed for a few days before I head out again!

It has been a nasty, rainy last 10 days in NC! I am not complaining, though. The south has dealt with drought conditions the last few years, so it is wonderful not having that problem. Not to mention, the rain is keeping the temperature down!

Sad news... My principal sent out an email today informing us that the parent of one of our (last year) 2nd graders had died in a car accident when a man crossed the center line. This just hurts my heart. Most of our students will face so many challenges in life because of their circumstances. It is so unfair to add a tragedy on top. I will definitely be praying for this student.

On to good news... I will be heading up to the "mountains" with friends tomorrow for the 4th. I'm not exactly sure where the mountains/cabin are, but that's where we're going. I'm assuming near Boone (I'm geographically challenged) since we'll be viewing fireworks {hopefully the rains hold out} there. It should be a nice, relaxing time. I feel like I have been living out of my Vera duffle for weeks now. Really, I have... I'll be headed back up to VA in a week or so to watch the dog while the brother travels on Navy business. I'm developing a love for Fredericksburg, though. :)
Since I don't make those super spectacular units like some of you fine folks, I am hosting a giveaway for The Quietest Classroom Pencil Sharpener from Classroom Friendly Supplies. I respect you all highly, and I would never endorse a product I didn't love. I LOVE this sharpener! I received one (the one pictured above) at the beginning of last year. I didn't have a single issue with it all year. NOT ONE! Not only did my 21 students use it multiple times a day, but the teacher next door started sending her students over when her electric sharpeners bit the dust. That's a lot of sharpening on a daily basis with NO ISSUES!! :) Did I get my point across?

Vistaprint: I ordered the postcards from the first made it of the summer. They came in the mail Saturday. They're OUTSTANDING!!! I've added two pictures below (one is a close up). I also ordered something for my team and myself that I SO want to share, but I want it to be a surprise (and they read my blog). :( {You'll just have to wait, ladies!!} I also ordered an iphone case. Who knew you could do that on Vistaprint?
Classroom Jobs: Finally, I think I'm going to have classroom jobs next year. Does anyone else have jobs at the 5th grade level? I just think it would make things run a little more smoothly... If I have a person designated to answer my phone when it rings, I won't be send students to the hospital for staples in the head (true story this past year). Ya know? I have a list of jobs I've compiled, but I'm not sure how I want to post them in the room. I don't want to take up a huge amount of space, and I don't have a free bulletin board to use. SUGGESTIONS??

My jobs include: Captain (one per pod), Messenger, Homework Checker, Librarian, Operator (phone), Classroom Custodian, Line Leader, Caboose/Electrician, Teacher Assistant, Paper Passer, Pencil Sharpener, Bathroom Monitor (boy/girl), Door Holder, Hand Sanitizer, Table Washer/Waiter (wash lunch tables and get the snack), Substitute

I wasn't going to participate in this linky (only because I felt like being completely lazy couch potato when I woke up this morning), but I realized I have NEVER shared a few of my 400+ pictures of when I toured Ireland. So, after breakfast, coffee, and a couple hours of The Plague on The History Channel, I have finally overcome my laziness... a little. I've labeled every picture with where it was taken incase you would like to do further research... I'm going to try to keep this brief!

In June/July of 2011, my brother, his {then} girlfriend, and I went to Ireland for two weeks. We took a 12-day all Ireland tour via Paddywagon Tours. This tour was packed with amazing people from around the world. If you're under the age of 50 and love a good time, I highly recommend this tour group!!! We started in Dublin and, basically, worked our way around Ireland and ended in Dublin. So. Much. Fun. I'm going to move on to the pictures. If you have questions, please ask!

Derry is full of history... very sad history. If you know anything about Ireland, you know that religion (Catholics and Protestants) has been a conflict for many, many years. There are walls and fences that separate Catholics and Protestants. While there, I took a Derry Walls tour... so incredibly sad, but it is a beautiful place. Oxymoron?

More walls to separate the Catholics and Protestants. We took a Black Taxi Tour while in Belfast and learned a lot! They, too, have a very sad history that continues today. While you can travel between sides, there are still gates that close and lock every night. This is to prevent people from going into people's houses at night to murder them.

Everything is pretty self-explanatory!
Listening: - I'm a history buff... I can't get enough!!!
Loving: - I don't have cable or satellite at my apartment. It's just too expensive, so I'm soaking it up while I'm house sitting! :)
Thinking: - My Vistaprint is supposed to arrive today (our mail here stinks).
Wanting: - I am not a fan of summer. I love the time off, but I hate to sweat. Living in the south, you sweat no matter what you do. I hate it!
Needing: - I need a little motivation to do anything today. :)
Tips: - I don't have graphic software to make a lot of the amazing images you see on blogs; however, I am able to use Powerpoint to layer graphics, text, etc. over images. It works pretty well!
